THE BASICS
A supportive approach to managing dental fear
Sedation dentistry encompasses various pharmacological methods used to relax patients and manage anxiety during dental appointments. Depending on the tier of sedation selected, patients enter a state ranging from mild relaxation to deep, conscious sleep. It is important to note that sedation manages anxiety, while local anesthesia is still used separately to block pain at the treatment site. Sedation is not a one-size-fits-all solution; it is a carefully customized medical protocol based on your specific health history, anxiety levels, and the complexity of your planned procedure.
TREATMENTS
Four approaches to a relaxed dental visit
A mild, fast-acting inhaled sedative that helps you feel calm while remaining fully awake and responsive.
A prescribed medication taken by mouth before your appointment to produce a deeper state of relaxation and drowsiness.
Deep, conscious sedation delivered intravenously, ideal for complex surgeries or patients with severe dental phobia.
A comprehensive, judgment-free clinical approach utilizing environment, communication, and tiered sedation to help you overcome fear.
MAKING SENSE OF YOUR OPTIONS
Choosing the right level of comfort
| Concern | Best Starting Point |
|---|---|
| Mild Nervousness | If you just need to take the edge off during a routine cleaning or filling, Nitrous Oxide provides quick relaxation and still allows you to drive yourself home. |
| Moderate Anxiety or Longer Appointments | If you struggle to sit comfortably for extended periods, Oral Sedation provides a deep, drowsy relaxation (requires a driver). |
| Significant Phobia or Complex Surgery | For extractions, implants, or severe fear, IV Sedation provides the deepest level of monitored, conscious sedation with minimal memory of the procedure. |
| General Avoidance of Care | Start with an evaluation for Dental Anxiety Relief to discuss your fears openly and build a custom comfort plan before any tools are picked up. |
The right level of sedation depends entirely on your medical history and emotional needs. A consultation with Dr. Thurman is the first step to determining which option is safest and most effective for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation
Will I be completely unconscious?
No. We utilize “conscious sedation.” Even under deep IV sedation, you will be able to breathe autonomously and respond to instructions, though you will likely have very little memory of the appointment.
Can I drive myself home?
If you receive Nitrous Oxide, yes. If you receive Oral Sedation or IV Sedation, you are strictly required by law to have a responsible adult drive you to and from the clinic.
Will I still get numbed with a needle?
Yes, local anesthetic is still required to block pain. However, we typically administer the numbing medication after the sedation has taken full effect, so you are completely relaxed first.
Is dental sedation safe?
Yes. When administered by a trained clinical team following strict medical history reviews and continuous monitoring protocols, dental sedation has an excellent safety record.
